What is the Samsung Scholarship ?
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship has been given out since 1996 and is made possible by a gift from Samsung, a global leader in electronics. The fund was a way to thank the American soldiers who helped Korea during the Korean War. Because of interest and other income from the fund’s capital, more than 2,069 people have been given scholarships worth more than $5.5 million so far.

The Samsung American Legion Scholarship pays for first-year college and can be used for room and board, tuition, books, and fees. Winners are chosen every year based on a scoring system that looks at things like grades, extracurricular activities, and community work. The following numbers are given out every year:
- There are ten National Scholars, and two from each area will each get $10,000.
- Ten runner-ups across the country each get $5,000, with two winners from each area.
- The remaining department finalists will each get $1,250.
Who’s eligible?
- High school juniors from Girls or Boys State
- Wartime veteran’s child, grandchild, great-grandchild, or lawfully adopted child. The following military service dates are eligible:
- World War I, April 6, 1917–November 11, 1918
- World War II: December 7, 1941–December 31, 1946
- Korean War, June 25, 1950–January 31, 1955 (Direct descendants of Korean War veterans gain 3 additional points.)
- Vietnam War, Feb. 28, 1961–May 7, 1975
- Lebanon/Grenada: August 24, 1982–July 31, 1984
- Panama, Dec. 20, 1989–Jan. 31, 1990
- From Aug. 2, 1990 to the end of hostilitiesAfghanistan, Iraq, and the War on Terrorism
How To Apply
You can now fill out an application for the Samsung Scholarship online before you come to Arkansas Girls State. You can get to the app by clicking on the link below.
All paperwork needs to be posted to the website; Arkansas Girls State will not accept applications or other paperwork.
Since it might take a while to find or get the supporting papers needed for the application, people who want to apply should start the process as soon as they know they will be going to Girls State. The Samsung Scholarship website has information about what kinds of supporting papers are acceptable and where to find them.
